Sony Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact & XA1 Plus Hands On!

By 20th October 2017Phones

Sony just launched their latest Sony Xperia XZ1 (S$898) and Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact (S$668) flagships here and get this – their headline feature is making 3D scans. Yup – 3D scans of your head so you can turn yourself into a mini cute avatar or hot dancing hunk! It’s interesting, but feels a little gimmicky at this point of time. We want to see if we can use these 3D scanning files for more real world applications – such as compositing and editing in professional 3D tools from Adobe.

Beyond that, these phones are actually pretty strong affordable competitors to the Android Market. The Sony Xperia XZ1, and Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact have the latest Snapdragon 835 chip, 4GB of RAM, 19MP super slow mo 960fps camera and a decent 1080p LCD screen. My only concern is the 2700mAH battery – it’s a little small for a flagship of this era.

The Sony Xperia XA1 Plus (S$498) on the other hand is a decent midranger with a Helio P20, and a huge 3430mAH battery. It sounds like a great phone for people who don’t need all the latest bells and whistles – just a solid battery. We’ll be doing a hands on review of the Sony Xperia XZ1 and Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact in the future, but in the meantime check out Zack’s review of the XA1 midranger – it’s got great battery life!
